DPIIT Startup Recognition Guide
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognition is one of the most valuable credentials an Indian startup can obtain. It unlocks tax exemptions, easier compliance, and access to government tenders.
Eligibility Criteria
Your entity must meet ALL of the following:
Age: Incorporated or registered not more than 10 years ago
Type: Registered as a Private Limited Company, Registered Partnership Firm, or LLP
Turnover: Annual turnover has not exceeded INR 100 crore in any financial year since incorporation
Innovation: Working towards innovation, development, or improvement of products/services, OR has a scalable business model with high potential for employment generation or wealth creationStep-by-Step Application Process
#### Step 1: Register on Startup India Portal
Visit [startupindia.gov.in](https://startupindia.gov.in) and create an account using your mobile number and email.
#### Step 2: Fill the Recognition Application
Provide the following details:
Entity details (name, CIN/LLPIN, incorporation date)
Industry and sector
Number of employees
Brief description of your product/service
How your startup is working towards innovation#### Step 3: Upload Required Documents
Certificate of Incorporation/Registration
A write-up about the nature of your business describing how it is working towards innovation
Any patents, trademarks, or proof of innovation (optional but helpful)#### Step 4: Self-Certification
Self-certify that your startup meets the eligibility criteria. No recommendation letter from an incubator is required anymore.
Benefits of DPIIT Recognition
#### Tax Benefits (Section 80-IAC)
3-year tax holiday: Eligible startups can claim income tax exemption for any 3 consecutive years out of the first 10 years from incorporation
Must be incorporated after April 1, 2016
Requires additional certification from the Inter-Ministerial Board (IMB)#### Angel Tax Exemption (Section 56(2)(viib))
Exemption from angel tax on share premium received from resident investors

DPIIT recognition is typically granted within 2-5 working days of application. It is a fully digital process.
